ANDREW SPINDLER ANTIQUES & DESIGN

THE OWNER

Andrew Spindler-Roesle is a lifelong collector who is guided by the belief that beauty comes in many forms. He received his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Spanish Literature from Brown and Yale Universities, respectively, before deciding that he thrived on the independence and creativity of being a self-employed antiquarian. He continued his training at Sotheby’s Institute in London before working for Devenish & Company, an exclusive dealer in fine antique English furniture in New York City.  Andrew is an Honorary Life Advisor and Benefactor at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He also serves on the Collections Committee and Council of Historic New England. He is a former member of the Board and Collections Committee of the Cape Ann Museum. Please visit their websites to learn more about their extraordinary collections and programs: mfa.orgwww.historicnewengland.org and www.capeannmuseum.org.

THE SHOP

Featured in local and national publications, Andrew Spindler Antiques & Design is honored to have been selected Best of North Shore by Northshore magazine for 9 consecutive years and Best of Boston by Boston magazine twice. Established in 1998, the shop offers an unusual and eclectic mix of fine period furniture, 20th century design, works of art, decorations, lighting, and curiosities from the 17th-20th centuries. Andrew brings to the shop his passion for beautiful, uncommon objects, a generally understated, some might say academic, sensibility and a creative, joyful approach to mixing and matching furniture and objects, looking for affinities and narratives that tell a story visually, historically or just privately. Visitors often remark on the relative sense of calm and order that pervade the shop (except on our desk which is brimming to overflowing with papers, books and Andrew's giant Blue Willow cup of green tea), perhaps because it defies their more common experience of navigating more densely packed emporiums. Every object in the shop is there for a reason, primarily because we love it--whether for its quality, craftsmanship, design or playfulness. We gravitate towards unusual items, whether fine art, furniture or objects, which are possessed of strong, graphic form, interesting surface, sometimes a sense of wit or humor, and timeless good design, especially early objects which read as "modern" in their form and function.  Certain "cluster collections" are a constant and one can almost always find a good quantity of, for example, neoclassical English Black Basalt pottery, original Folly Cove Designers hand block printed textiles (framed as art for the wall, or transformed into handmade pillows), and 19th century English white ironstone pottery. Still, we love the turnover of objects, in part because buying is so much more fun than selling (don't you agree?), but, equally, because we want every visit to the shop to offer something fresh, new and adventurous for our visitors and customers. All items are guaranteed as described.

Located in the historic shipbuilding town and fried clam capital (!) of Essex, Massachusetts, a 40 minute drive from Boston on the scenic North Shore, the shop is within easy walking distance of a wide variety of other antiques shops and restaurants, all nestled along a beautiful old road flanked by the Essex River and its beautiful salt marshes. For more information on Essex, please visit http://www.visitessexma.com. Gorgeous beaches, historic houses, and scenic coastal drives, hikes and walks make Cape Ann a beautiful destination for a daytime excursion or longer visit to this unspoiled corner of New England. Come visit and we will share some of our favorite places with you.

We usually exhibit at antiques shows in New York City in January and East Hampton, New York in July. Please see the Show section of this website for information.
