SOLD--Original Folly Cove Designers Hand Block Printed Pillow in the Home Port Pattern
A vintage, original hand block printed Folly Cove Designers textile, made into a pillow, in the "Home Port" pattern, by Louise Kenyon, 1949, blue on cream, showing a sequence from bottom to top, of fish, sailing ships, sailors, dancing girls and a tree lined Main Street. Like many Folly Cove designs, this one is narrative and tells the story of sailors returning home. Thematically, it starts under water with the fish at the bottom and ends in the sky with the trees at the top. It is rare to find larger pieces of this sought after fabric, especially in this pattern and color. The down filling and linen backing are new. The condition is bright, fresh and excellent overall.
The Folly Cove Designers were founded in Gloucester, Massachusetts by Virginia Lee Burton, the celebrated children's book author and illustrator who wrote "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel", "The Little House", and "Mabel the Cable Car", among other classics, which have never gone out of print. Production of these textiles ceased in 1968 when Virginia Lee Burton died. Examples of their work are in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Cape Ann Museum, in Gloucester, Massachusetts and public and private collections worldwide.
