Chinese or Japanese Scholar's Rock Mountain Range
Chinese or Japanese Scholar's Rock Mountain Range
A Chinese or Japanese scholar's rock resembling a mountain range, this specimen with white veins, crevices and smooth peaks, is mounted on a conforming carved wood base. Known as Gongshi in Chinese, and Suiseki in Japanese, scholar's rocks are naturally occurring or shaped rocks which are traditionally appreciated for their resemblance to landscapes by scholars for display in their rarefied studios. The scholar drew inspiration from the natural world; he did not go out into nature to paint or compose poetry. Rather, he worked within the seclusion of his studio and used these ‘representations of mountains’ as inspiration for his work. This example is not conventionally beautiful, but we love for its relative simplicity and oddity.
