19th Century Sterling Silver Hand Mirror and Hair Brush
19th Century Sterling Silver Hand Mirror and Hair Brush
A beautiful Aesthetic Movement period sterling silver hand mirror and brush, with unusual and 'modern' hammered and raised decoration, American circa 1880. Like all decorative arts from the Aesthetic Movement, the designs are inspired by Japanese design, featuring abstract swirl and star ornament. While we haven't yet found marks on these, we believe they are by Whiting or the Whiting Gotham Silver Company. This luxurious silver brush and hand mirror would be beautiful on a bureau, dressing table, vanity or in a powder room.

The Whiting Company traces its name back to a shop known as Tifft and Whiting, which produced silver goods in Attleboro, Massachusetts, beginning around 1840. After changing hands several times, the Whiting Manufacturing Company of New York was incorporated in 1866.
