AN UNUSUAL OVERSIZED NAUTICAL ONION LANTERN IN TIN AND BLOWN GLASS, THE CONICAL TIN ROOF, OVER A TIN COLLAR PUNCHED WITH STARS FOR VENTING HEAT, OVER A BLOWN GLASS SPHERE WITHIN A TIN CAGE TO PROTECT FROM BREAKAGE, American, circa 1920’s.
This form dates from 19th century American fishing vessels, which were fitted with these onion-shaped globes, which shielded a whale-oil flame from wind, rain, and sea spray.
